'Competing against the monoliths'

NZ's Fastest Growing Companies - Graeme Kennedy
Dunedin-based Cook Brothers Construction is moving quickly toward its goal of becoming New Zealand's preferred national commercial building company.
Begun only five years ago by directors David and brother Ben Bulling, the business began operating from Tauranga in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty markets in February and plans to open a Queenstown office in March.
"Then Auckland will be our next step," David Bulling said, "and we will be in six regions - Otago, Southern Lakes, Canterbury, Wellington, Auckland and Tauranga - by 2013 when our current 40 staff will have grown to 300.
"It is quite an ambitious strategy but we have followed it since Day One when we sat down and wrote our goals and vision to become a national builder. "Our growth all comes down to tenacity and it is our attitude which sets us apart from the others.
"We know we don't have to be the biggest but the fastest and we compete well with the monoliths as they are not so quick to react in the market.
"We have a strong brand and are seen as quite fresh, youthful and energetic with a young team keen on getting on with things."
Cook Brothers listed 45th in the 2009 Deloitte Past 50 listings with 160.64% growth, which Mr Bulling said could be maintained based on forward project bookings.
A civil engineer, he said the company name came from Capt James Cook to reflect the navigator's heritage.
"Our first job was an apartment block in Dunedin then we got into the tender market, mostly with schools which are medium jobs and a good start for a commercial contractor wanting to go on to bigger projects," he said.
"We have now completed about 100 buildings including warehouses, shopping malls, sporting facilities and high-end residential while our most recent job was the $5 million refurbishment of the Golden Centre Mall in the CBD."
Mr Bulling said the company was working on 15 projects and consistently winning 25% of its tenders. "We get the very best skills we can to drive us forward and ensure we are an attractive employer so people want to come and join us," he said.
"We pay and equip them well and sponsor staff events - vision is one thing but front-line people are where it counts.
"And big businesses like Fletchers and Fulton Hogan started here in Dunedin -it's a fantastic springboard."
Deloitte Dunedin partner Kyle Cameron said Cook Brothers had become known for its youthful energy and drive to succeed.
"They have been 100% focused on making the business work since they started," Mr Cameron said, "and think long-term about responding to tenders which is not done by many construction firms here.
"Cook Brothers are very much about the customer, their pricing is sharp and it is a breath of fresh air to see someone challenging the dominant players - and they are unsettling them."
