Cook Brothers People and Performance Manager, Nat Chapman, recently joined industry leaders at the BuildUP26 Panel Discussion to explore the real drivers behind high-performing construction teams.

The conversation focused on the practicalities of success on site. This wasn’t another conversation about abstract theory but the everyday behaviours, decisions, and habits that delivered stronger project outcomes.

Drawing on Cook Brothers' own experience, Nat shared how high-performing teams are intentionally built through clarity, connection, and culture. When roles are clear, communication is strong, and success is defined collectively, teams move faster and with greater ownership.

“Connection is our superpower as humans. Using this to develop high-quality relationships is the foundation for high-performing teams. This enables us to have high levels of psychological safety. We can share ideas, formulate strategy, challenge positively, innovate and craft the best way forward, maximising the strengths within the team to deliver excellence in a satisfying and fulfilling way”, said Nat.

By treating our wider project network as trade partners, not just subcontractors, and by embedding processes inspired by elite sport, Cook Brothers is actively building teams that perform under pressure and improve from one phase to the next.

What Drives Our High-Performing Teams

Cook Brothers drives high performance through role clarity, strong alignment, and a shared understanding of what success looks like. When teams communicate openly, challenge each other constructively, and invest in high-quality relationships, trust grows, and blind spots are addressed early.

How We Bring Performance to Life

We embed these behaviours through clear project handovers, structured moments to pause and reflect, and learning points at key project and trade partner transitions. This approach helps teams learn fast, stay aligned through each phase, and continuously lift performance on site.

Sustainability Through People

At Cook Brothers, our sustainability approach starts with people. Our priority is to protect and care for our team and our communities by creating growth opportunities, fostering an environment that lives our values, and ensuring projects support wellbeing and performance. Through education, targeted training, and performance practices, we’re building sustainable high performance for our people, our partners, and the future of our industry.

Anyone can build a project. Not everyone builds a high-performing team.

At Cook Brothers, our focus on people, learning, and connection is what sets us apart. As one team, we continue to reflect, grow, and lift performance, building stronger outcomes for our people, partners, community, and our industry.
