It was a proud table of team, clients and consultants who attended the 2024 New Zealand Commercial Project Awards, celebrating another year of building excellence across New Zealand. It was a special night for our Canterbury team, whose efforts were recognised over four categories with Gold and Silver Awards, signifying the region's high level of quality and craftsmanship.

Our work on the Hihiani Radar Project at Christchurch Airport for Airways New Zealand was recognised in the Industrial category with a Gold Award and a Value Award in the under $1 million category. The new radar is a significant upgrade, replacing equipment that had been operational for over 35 years. It now provides three-dimensional flight tracking within a wider radius, enhancing safety and efficiency for air traffic in the region. The project's success hinged on innovative approaches, including ground-level assembly of the radar tower's top pedestal to avoid delays in earthworks, while ensuring seamless integration of various technical aspects, from steelwork to mechanical installations, under stringent health and safety measures.

Congratulations to Airways New Zealand, Beca and Indra Company.

Thanks to our trade partners - Faulks, Steel & Tube, VIP Structural Steel, Aotea Electric, NIX Fencing and Wilsons Traffic Management.

The Kaikoura Fire Station was destroyed in the 2016 Kaikoura earthquake, and its replacement stands as a testament to the community's fortitude in the aftermath of this natural disaster. It was recognised in the Civic category with a Gold Award. The station's thoughtful design successfully preserved neighbours’ views, while blending seamlessly into the local landscape. Efficient collaboration was key as the team was confronted with a range of challenges from the natural terrain to the logistical complexities of a remote location. These obstacles were expertly navigated to deliver one of New Zealand's largest volunteer fire stations. The new station is a symbol of safety and resilience for the Kaikoura community.

The Canterbury Cancer Centre for The Cancer Society Canterbury West Coast won a gold award in the Health Category. The new facility offers comprehensive recovery support and replaces the facility that was destroyed in the 2011 earthquake. The new centre features an office admin area, reception, function room, and 50 rooms for cancer recovery. The project faced numerous setbacks that were overcome by the Cook Brothers Construction team, including the COVID-19 pandemic which presented significant workforce challenges. To mitigate delays, the team re-sequenced tasks and utilised existing resources where possible. The centre’s design features, including three-level pre-cast panels and a smart passive fire system, demonstrate remarkable construction ingenuity. Sustainability was incorporated throughout, with material repurposing, reducing waste, and adopting eco-friendly methods.

Our renovation project at Burnham School won a silver award in the Education category. This job involved the transformation of outdated classrooms into cutting-edge, innovative learning spaces. Navigating the complexities of working in a live environment, our team expertly minimised disruptions while prioritising safety. The challenge of material procurement during COVID-19, coupled with tight timeframes, necessitated resourcefulness and efficiency. This renovation significantly uplifted the school environment, increasing enrolments, and has created a sense of unity and belonging among students and staff. The comprehensive refurbishment of teaching spaces, breakout areas, and essential infrastructure updates has transformed the outdated areas into modern learning spaces.
